BULK /bʌlk/ noun: the mass or magnitude of something large
Offsite backup VPS. 2TB ZFS, no egress fees, $5/month.
SSH in, point your backup tool at it, and you're done. Flat monthly rate — move as much data as you want without a surprise bill at the end of the month.
Storage is cheap. Getting your data back is not.
Cloud object storage looks affordable at first. But when you need to restore — or even just verify — your backups, you get billed per gigabyte of data out. AWS S3 charges around $0.09/GB for egress. A 2TB restore costs roughly $185 before you've even looked at compute.
With BulkVM, transfer is included. Move your data in, move it out — the monthly rate doesn't change. A 2TB restore costs exactly $0 extra. For the full cost math, see our comparison vs S3, Backblaze B2, and Wasabi.
Works with every backup tool
It's a Linux VPS with SSH access and a mounted ZFS volume. Any tool that can write to a remote filesystem over SSH works out of the box.
rsync
The standard. Incremental file sync over SSH — fast, reliable, and available on every Linux machine. Add a cron job and you're done.
rclone
Mount your VPS as SFTP and sync from anything — local disk, another cloud, NAS. Useful for cross-platform setups or migrating existing cloud backups.
restic
Encrypted, deduplicated backups with built-in versioning. Uses SFTP backend — point it at your VPS and it handles chunking, encryption, and retention automatically.
BorgBackup
Deduplication and compression built in. SSH remote repositories are a first-class feature, and root access lets you enforce append-only mode: see our setup guide.
Duplicati
GUI-based backup for Windows and macOS users. SFTP backend works directly with your VPS — useful for homelab setups without a dedicated Linux host.
Proxmox Backup Server
Run PBS on your VPS and back up your Proxmox cluster offsite. The ZFS storage handles the deduplication workload well — large VM images compress significantly.
The offsite piece of your 3-2-1 strategy
The 3-2-1 backup rule: keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different media types, with 1 copy offsite. The offsite copy is the one most people skip because it's the most expensive to maintain — until now.
A $5/mo BulkVM VPS in Phoenix, AZ — geographically separate from wherever your primary data lives — covers the offsite leg without a subscription to a managed backup service or a recurring cloud storage bill that scales with usage.
Pick your storage size
All plans include ZFS RAIDZ2 storage, SSD boot, 1 IPv4, /64 IPv6, and instant setup.
